Steve McQueen 24/3/1930 - 07/11/1980

Terrance Steven McQueen was born on this day, 24th March in 1930.

A true style Icon, the phrase “effortless style” could have been coined for him.

His legacy lives on, the personification of a naturally stylish look, that can’t be faked. Years after his death, brands as huge in status as Rolex, Dolce & Gabbana, Tag Huer and Persol are still naming products after him, or relaunching products favoured by McQueen.

In a world of so much shallow marketing, with paid-for product placements adorning many of today’s “celebrities”, it’s refreshing to take time to reflect, on his birthday, the Fashion force that was, and remains, Steve McQueen.

His famous quote “I live for myself, and I answer to nobody” would have been a fitting reproach, had fashion PRs and marketing teams been as active in his era, approaching McQueen to act as a paid clothes horse.

Rightfully dubbed The King of Cool, McQueen dressed simply, casually, but would have the same cool elegance whether attired in a sharp suit or the much-favoured jeans and T Shirt or sweatshirt. He exuded masculinity, and more importantly a relaxed air of confidence, whatever he wore. His passion for motorcycle racing, and his disregard for the inherent dangers added to his edgy charisma.

One staple item of McQueen’s regular attire was the Baracuta G9 Harrington Jacket.
Perhaps the most enduring images of McQueen are of him sporting the “original” Harrington. Baracuta created the first Harrington Jacket as early as 1937, and it, along with McQueen, has acquired legendary status.

To celebrate Steve McQueen’s birthday today, the guys at Baracuta have issued us with a 15% discount code on any full priced product. It’s valid now, and until 7th April. Use the code FASHIONTHING at the checkout.
